Grower Champagnes – Jancis’ & Antony Rose’s pick of the bunch

9 February 2010

An offer for grower Champagnes arrived in my inbox today, hot on the heels of Saturday’s blog about Jacques Selosse Initiale, also a grower Champagne.  These ones are tipped, indeed scored, by Jancis Robinson MW and Antony Rose and available from Fine & Rare Wine who say:

“Grower Champagnes are the Champenois equivalent of small Burgundy domaines: family owned, dedicated to high quality and committed to reflecting their terroirs. To see how they measure up against the Grand Marques, F+R held a huge blind tasting and with the help of Jancis Robinson MW and The Independent’s Antony Rose, we picked our way through 64 Champagnes.

The overall favourites from Alain Soutiran plus Jancis’ top-rated, Lallier Grand Cru Grand Reserve were the clear winners with the BEST VALUE going to Pierre Moncuit Huges de Coulmet.”

Click here to follow up with F&R about prices etc – pretty smart at roughly just over £20/bottle to just under £30/bottle.

A post script - I received a tweet today in response to this pointing out the Jancis hadn’t raved about the Soutiran wines, so not her clear favourites.  Not sure what Mr Rose thought…
