The Mail & Guardian Online has just published a list of the Cape’s Top 20 Wineries, as compiled by South African wine writer Tim James, here.
Tim first undertook the exercise in 2001. The list is based on a poll of selected wine writers, sommeliers and retailers, this year, myself included.
I am so not surprised to see Swartland stars Chris and Andrea Mullineux (pictured) break into the list in their first year of qualification (the only criterion Tim imposed was that the winery must have a track record of at least three vintages). Good on ‘em! Click here for my recent report on their wines, including three five star Platter winners & their very exciting new Schist and Granite Syrahs.
Tim also asked us to nominate up to five developing wineries likely to become strong top 20 contenders in the near future. I look forward to seeing it. As the Mullineuxs have so ably demonstrated, there’s overarching talent around among the younger generation.
