Guilty as charged, wine writers’ tastings notes can be OTT. It’s part of the fun of it. In this Saturday’s The Guardian, Simon Hoggart’s funny bone was tickled by Fine & Rare wine merchant’s descriptions of a Chambertin Clos de Beze which “Needs work to be coaxed from the glass” versus a Mazis-Chambertin that “Jumps out of the glass.” Entitling his column “Wines that play hard to get,” Hoggart came up with some choice alternative tasting notes in this vein – you can imagine….
Still, I think even Hoggart (who pens a wine column for The Spectator) would be hard pushed to better the purple prose accompanying a swanky box of Christmas chocs I opened this week. Here it is:
“the fine milk chocolate appears alone at first and gradually begins to flirt with elegant notes of wood and warm spice which bloom and disappear progressively during each mouthful, finally leaving a warm and resonant echo.”
Lovely it is too (the chocolate)…wonder if the author writes stage directions?!?
All best
