In December, I completed the last leg of my quest to identify 50 Great Portuguese Wines, visiting Brito e Cunha, Passadouro, Wine & Soul, Quinta do Noval, Quinta de Romaneira, Quinta do Portal and Quinta das Murcas in the Douro and Herdade de Esporão in Alentejo.  You’ll find highlights in my regional report – click here , including Noval’s new “critter brand” (pictured) – a Douro (well VR Duriense) Syrah no less!

It’s been a marathon. All told, I spent six weeks in Portugal last year and tasted many hundreds of wines at home and abroad.  Jaded?  Not a bit – Portugal’s vinous offering is way too diverse and, as they say, variety is the spice of life.  Overwhelmed?  Just a little – who wouldn’t be, whittling down a list bulging with worthy candidates to a mere 50….
