Third time lucky and so it was on my recent visit to Portugal in July where I caught up with Vinho Verde supremo Anselmo Mendes. He’s a busy man, making Vinho Verde under his eponymous label and consulting widely to, among others, Quinta do Ameal, Casa de Cello (both Vinho Verde) and Douro producer Alves de Sousa.

He’s also a thoroughly nice, unassuming man who freely shared his thoughts on how to make winning Vinho Verde, not to mention some fantastic wines - a seemingly non-stop flow of sigh worthy Vinho Verde which included two stunning, structured Alvarinhos I’d not previously tasted before – Curtimenta and an exciting new single parcel cuvée which has yet to be named!

You can read all about the visit with Anselmo on my Portugal regional report page here and you’ll find my report of the highlights of an earlier Alvarinho-focused tasting on the same day here.
